THE latest addition to the range of Muir-Hill dump trucks made by E. Boydell and Co., Ltd., Manchester, has been specifically designed for working in confined spaces. Capable of loading 20 tons an hour, it can operate in warehouses, factories, ships' holds or small building sites, where the use of such machines is often difficult. or impossible. It is known as the LH l hydraulic loader.

Driven by a 35 b.h.p. petrol engine, or by the equivalent oil engine, the LH1 has a welded-steel chassis and an articulated forged-steel axle. A split track rod is employed, giving a turning circle of only 15 ft.

In unit with the engine is a gearbox giving two forward and two reverse speeds and a worm-reduction final drive delivering power to the fully floating axle. Speeds up to 12 m.p.h. are possible. Alternative types of bucket, fork lift or dozer blade may be fitted to the model. The two hydraulic jacks which operate the equipment are arranged to discharge a bucket fully or partially. To lift a load to the maximum height of 8 ft. 9 ins. takes 5 seconds. The maximum dump clearance is 5 ft.

• Bucket capacity is 10i cubic ft. (1,200 lb.). The weight of the complete vehicle is 1 ton 15 cwt., and its overall length is 10 ft. 6 ins., width, 4 ft. 3 ins. and height, 5 ft. 1 in. The axle articulation enables the machine to negotiate an obstacle up to 6 ins. high, 6 ins, also being the normal ground clearance.
