Iveco considers stretching tractors to meet spiralling demand for LEZ-compliant 26-tonners
Words: Steve Banner DEMAND FOR second-hand Euro-4/5 26-tonners, which will be able to enter the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) from January 2012 without penalty, has reached such a pitch that Iveco is thinking about having used 4x2 tractor units converted into six-wheel rigids.
Used vehicle operations director Paul Evans says: “We’re suffering from a shortage of Euro-4/5 7.5and 18-tonners too.” Availability of used Euro-4/5 tractor units is not quite such an issue, but funding is still proving an obstacle for certain operators, he contends.
“We’re hearing that some inance houses are asking for deposits of up to 50%,” he says. “That’s a lot of money.”
He has found the last two months to be quiet after a busy Q1. He wonders if some of it may be due to having been forced to tell operators repeatedly that he hasn’t got what they are looking for. If that happens often enough, then they eventually stop ringing. “Our customers know we’ll call if we’ve got anything that might interest them,” he says. ■
