Today, WIL runs three types of events annually: educational events, logistics industry events and pure networking/social events. The themes for the educational events vary, but are always selected by members at the WIL UK AGM.

“This year we have already hosted events focusing on using social media for business, and IT in logistics – varied topics that are appealing to different sections of our membership,” says Waring.

“Last year we had an event focusing on diversity and inclusion in logistics, and events relating to improving confidence are always well subscribed.” Events are always sponsored by supporters or fellow members, are totally free to attend, and usually attract 40-50 people. Sponsors provide rooms, food and depot tours.

“Many companies are knocking on our door now to host future events. We also run an annual golf day, which is an ironic nod to industry golf days we normally don’t attend. At our event you have golf lessons prompting much hilarity – or play 9 holes if you can – have a wonderful lunch, and then some professional development tips,” says Waring.

WIL also arranges meet-ups at industry events, such as the CV Show and Multimodal.

“These usually attract between 15 and 30 people and are a good place to network, thanks to a feeling of being ‘among friends’ at exhibitions and conferences. This has transformed many members’ experience of attending such events, and made them much more accessible and friendly.” WIL also holds more social events – most notably its annual party, which this year is being held on 16 September in Coventry.

“We have a sponsored champagne reception and of course men are welcome – but we like to don our dancing shoes after the meal and party,” warns Waring.
