The Driver CPC is a road safety directive, aimed at reducing the number of accidents involving large goods vehicles, as well as improving the professionalism of the industry.
Each HGV driver will receive a Certificate of Professional Competence that must be renewed every five years. From 10 September 2009, anyone holding a vocational driving licence immediately attained “acquired” rights and has until 2014 to clock up 35 hours of periodic training to prove they have reached a standard necessary to drive HGVs.
New drivers acquiring a licence after 10 September 2009 have to obtain an Initial Qualification, in addition to their HGV licence, to drive professionally.
