RTITB SPANNERMEN CONTEST FINAL • On Thursday 30 June Telfford will host the final of the Road Transport Industry Training Board's national junior mechanics competition.

The eliminating practical round starts at 09:30hrs with the theory quiz at 13:30hrs. The public are welcome to attend.

The final will be held at the RTITB Multi-occupational and Education Centre, High Ercall, Telford, Shropshire.

TYRE DISTRIBUTORS SURVEY FROM ICC • The ICC Information Group has published the 1988 edition of the tyre factors and distributors financial survey and company directory.

The publication contains information from 430 quoted and unquoted companies including a survey of company accounts, 15 unquoted companies with

profits over million, Dunlop's unquoted profit table and 65 unquoted companies reporting a loss.

RITA EUROBOOK • The Road Haulage Association has produced a pamphlet entitled Towards 1992 — The Single European Market with information on EEC haulage proposals, taxes, domestic transport and cabotage.

TRAINING

• ODY REPAIRS FOR WOMEN • The Road Transport Industry Training Board is offering young women the chance to train in parts department practice and vehicles body repair and refinishing. The courses begin in September and are open to women from the Greater Birmingham area.

The scheme will be run as a YTS training programme: both courses lead to certification under the board's modular training scheme and to qualifications under the City and Guilds London Institute.

Light and heavy vehicles mechanics and body repairing courses are also available to all young people in the Birmingham, Walsall and Dudley areas.

These two-year programmes include 42 weeks of classroom training, and the RTITB feels that the prospects of permanent employment after the courses are excellent.

• Jabus Engineering has produced a soft-washer cutter which is capable of making any sealing or spacing washer from soft materials, including rubber, gasket material and shimstock. The cutter can be used on any 12.7mm capacity pedestal drilling machine and can make washers up to a diameter of 200mm.

SLIMLINE LIGHTING • Two slimline interior lights have been added to the FM range. Lumo 1 and Lumo 3 are said to be easy to fit and have two external fixing centres, so there is no need to cut panel recesses for installation.

Lumo 1 has a single eight watt lamp while the Lumo 3 has twin lamps. Both have cracked-ice diffusers with no end caps and integral on/off switches.

CYPRUS OPENS UP

• UK hauliers no longer need permits for lorries going to Cyprus. This change to the UK/Cyprus Road Transport Agreement was negotiated last month in Nicosia.

FERRIES NO COST FOR THE COACH TO CORK

• Swansea Cork Ferries is offering coach operators free coach travel on selected crossings between Swansea and Cork.

On some midweek ferries the return passenger fare for a coach party of 30-52 people is 220 a head but the coach goes free. The offer lasts until the end of the year.

ROAD NEWS M25 SPEED LIMIT

• A 50mph speed limit has been imposed on the M25 between junction 10 (Chertsey) and junction 13 (Staines) while improvement work is being carried out.

ERSIUNE TOLL DOWN

• Erskine Bridge in Scotland is to have a flat rate toll of 40p — a reduction of 40p for HGVs not covered by concessionary arrangements.

ROAD CLOSURES ON THE M63

• During summer and autumn there will be lane closures on the M63 from junctions 12 and 13 to facilitate work on the railway viaduct in Stockport.

Until 9 July there will be lane closures on both carriageways for the construction of central reserve crossings: one lane will be open for westbound traffic and two lanes for eastbound traffic.

After July, only one carriageway will be closed at a time.
