• Shildon-based City Vehicle Engineering's plans to build 500 minibuses a year, based on a design bought from SteyrDaimler-Puch (S-D-P), are roaring ahead. Durham County Council is expecting delivery of the first three CVEs by early August, and will use the vehicles on regular city bus routes. Barry Connor, CVE's commercial director, says there are more orders for the vehicle.
CVE is now offering three different engines to customers: the original Austrianspecification Daimler-Benz diesel 0M364 (driving through either manual or automatic ZE gearbox); the Land Rover 2.5litre turbo-diesel; and the Perkins 4182 diesel.
Connor says all three vehicles have welfare capability with two-door entrance and kneeling suspension. The CVE CityBus is front-wheel-drive which allows for a very low floor level. Connor says: "Passengers only have to step up 15cm or 30cm from the curb."
The buses will have an average of 23 seats, with luggage pen, and the overall body length will be 6.3 metres on a wheelbase of 3.4 metres.
