Your report on the Electric Vehicle Development Group's conference (June 2) was somewhat selective, and the following will give a more balanced picture.

Everyone agreed that electric vehicles are cheaper to operate and maintain, and that their initial cost will be reduced when they are manufactured in larger numbers and the development costs are spread more widely.

The figures quoted for bus availability were not complete, in that of the four vehicles operated, availability was 91 per cent, 88 per cent, 97 per cent and 22.5 per cent, and only the latter was quoted.

It is generally known that there will probably be adequate supplies of oil for premium uses at the end of the century but, as J. M. Barber, of the Department of Energy, said, this will entail the use of very expensive equipment to manufacture light oils suitable for transport from the heavy oils used by industry and for heating. This will, of course, make electric vehicles even cheaper comparatively to run.

The speakers from the city of Esslingen said that another 15 Duobuses will be introduced during the next few years, and the technical expertise gained will provide an economic alternative public transport system in other German cities in the latter part of the century, whether or not they already have overhead wires.

Dr Quarmby, managing director, buses, of the London Transport Executive, said that firm decisions about the design of electric buses could be left until 1990, but he did make it clear that a development programme will be required in order to have the requisite 'technology available at that time, and London Transport's immediate contribution is to provide a
