from the Electric Vehicle Development Group. ALAN ALDOUS, Chairman, Electric Vehicle Development Group, 59 Colebrooke Row, London N1 8AF.
A genera/ consensus among delegates at the conference was that electric vehicles for most purposes, particularly when used as buses, are considerably more expensive to run than diesel-powered vehicles and are likely to remain so, Dr Quartnby said in his paper that assuming successful development of a sodium culphur cell to 200wh hg net, additional weight of a front-entrance double-decker bus would be estimated at 400-500kg. Assuming that electricity costs ip per kw, the electric bus would add 5-6 per cent to revenue costs. This ignores additional costs or loss of benefits associated with heavier buses and limited vehicle range. The conference confirmed the reliability of limited range and capacity electric vehicles but did not show any new progress in making electric vehicles more acceptable. And as Mr A/61°as well knows, our pre-conference report would have covered more papers if he had obtained them for us. His failure to do so when, as we thought, his agreement bad been obtained, caused great embarrassment. In the case of National Carriers Ltd, this company kindly /et us have a copy, but after a week Mr Aldous said his technical committee was stiff "checking it". — Ed.
