A PARTIAL grant for new continental tour facilities from the Northampton area is to be made by the East Midland Traffic Commissioners to York Bros (Northampton) Ltd.

The company produced a substantial body of evidence during a three-day hearing that there was a lack of licensed facilities for continental tours to the now popular destinations of Brittany and Northern Spain, particularly for four, six and eight-day tours.

The original application was for 14 seaport and airport departure points for tours of up to 31 days from High am Ferrers, with picking up and setting-down points at Rushden, Wollaston, Wellingborough, Northampton, Towcester, Brackley and Oxford.

There were 12 objectors to the application — K. J. Ayres, a director, said the company operated a fleet of 30 coaches and during 1977 had run a total of 115 private tours to the Continent, proving that there was a demand in the area. York Bros were also travel agents and had five travel shops.

Some 35 public witnesses supported the application to show demand for bookings for less than full coaches and the necessity to advertise to fill up tours. It was claimed that none of the objectors were providing facilities for tours to Brittany or Northern Spain.

After York Bros had completed their case, there were discussions with the objectors, which resulted in agreement. The application was amended to limit airport de parture points to Birmingham, Gatwick and Luton, and seaports to Plymouth only. Proposed picking up points at Towcester, Brackley and Oxford were deleted and conditions attached that the only passengers carried should be those travelling on tours organised by York Bros (Travel) Ltd.
