COACH operators who are "funded" members of the Coach and Independent Bus Sector of Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport (CIBS) are now entitled to automatic membership of BRS Rescue, the nationwide breakdown service operated by British Road Services.
The operators' drivers can use BRS Rescue in the event of a breakdown simply by telephoning Freephone 4151 — the national control centre of BRS Rescue. The control centre, which is open 24 hours a day, is in touch with 180 BRS Rescue locations and 300 agents throughout Britain. BRS Rescue can also be contacted via motorway road-side telephone boxes and via the police.
CIBS members are "funded" by lodging a deposit as a guarantee of their standing, and the central fund thus created is used to guarantee payment for emergency assistance for all the CIBS members, up to a maximum of £300.
BRS Rescue staff will also call up a replacement coach from another CIBS "funded" member to rescue stranded passengers and are able to provide tyres, windscreens and electrical services.
