FOREIGN makes outnumbered British commercial vehicles at last week's Essex County Show which attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the Great Leighs site near Chelmsford.

For several years now there has been increasing show participation by the region's truck dealers and distributors with exhibits which go beyond the livestock and bulkfeeds applications of what used to be a purely agricultural event.

This year just about everything from fridge vans to fuel tankers, container carriers and bulk refuse units were on show, including several novel designs such as the Monoframe semi-trailer developed and built by a Chris Hudson Group company.

The Monoframe exhibit, on the Scantrucks stand, has a central box-girder spine from which the sophisticated independent wishbone suspension is outrigged. On the show exhibit, coupled to a Scania 81 tractor unit with a sleeper conversion to the operator's specification, single Michelin 18 R 22.5 X tyres are fitted all round.

Just across the aisle, more Swedish-made exhibits on the Rydale Trucks stand include a Volvo normal. control N 1027 double-drive tractor unit destined for service with Tulkon Waste Disposals Ltd, who have chosen this model for optimum performance on the road and at a Hertford tip with extremely difficult ground conditions.

Another Rydale exhibit was a Volvo F 1017 tractive unit for a Felixstowe haulier. Coupled to a York skeletal container carrier, the combination was shown with an unusual dualpurpose 20-foot container used in Fred Olsen Lines Canary Islands service.

An impressive bulk waste carrier was also featured in the Leyland section of the large Arlington Motors display. Based on a Reiver chassis, the 24cuyd container is mounted on Powell-Duffryn Rolonof Mk 2 equipment for use with Havering Waste Disposals Ltd of Epping.

Goodliffe Garages Ltd of Dagenham, with a representative selection of MercedesBenz-based commercials, included an unusual refrigerated van, part of a large order for a leading London distributor of meat products. The 508Dbased conversion has involved rebuilding the rear end to accommodate an insulated door and provision of a fridge power pack under the passenger seat in the cab.

A new name in petrol filling stations was represented by a Ford Transit 175 dropside truck to be used by Walker's of Halstead, Essex, to service their chain of Bulldog franchises. The Collier alloybodied unit is fitted with a manual-hydraulic Tangye loader of lOcwt capacity and will be used to carry forecourt equipment.
