From Partridge, Wilson and Co comes the Davenset battery tester designed for testing 12V batteries up to 100 Ah and to provide direct reading of condition. It shows whether the battery is serviceable and charged, or serviceable but requires charging, or faulty and needs replacing.
The tester consists of two hand-held probes linked by a short cable that are applied to the battery terminals. The cables contain convection-cooled resistors which provide a load equivalent to that of the vehicle's starter motor. Battery condition is shown by a moving-coil meter in the top of one of the probes. A label in the same position on the other probe explains how to interpret the meter reading. The meter scale is two-dimensional, with the horizontal edge calibrated in volts {7V-12V) and the side edges graduated in battery capacities between 20. Ah and 100 Ah.
The scale 'area has coloured zones of green and red to show whether the battery requires attention. The probes are encased in grey glassfibrereinforced plastics, lined with asbestos to ensure cool operation.
