• The Department of the Environment is consulting interested organizations on a proposal that, by October 1973, most new petrol-engined vehicles will have to comply with the limits for the emission of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons laid down by ECE Regulation No. 15.
It is proposed that this should apply to petrol-engined vehicles first used on or after October 1 1973 and not manufactured before April 11973.
Compliance with this regulation by the careful adjustment of the carburetter and timing devices will, says the DoE, reduce emissions of carbon monoxide by up to 30 per cent and of hydrocarbons by up to 10 per cent as compared with the emissions from an uncontrolled vehicle.
EEC Regulation No. 15 also contains provisions for reducing emissions of hydrocarbons by a further 25 per cent, by requiring a device to prevent gases escaping from the crankcase. The fitting of such a device has been mandatory on new vehicles registered in this country since January I this year.
