Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

This type 68LXB eight-wheeled 26-ton-gvw tipper operated by F. W. Whinfrey, Sheffield, has recently been modified by the ERF service centre at Middlewich, Cheshire to operate at 28 tons gross. It is an example of the uprating conversions of three-axle rigids to 24 tons and four-axle rigids to 26 and 28 tons which is now being offered by ERF and for which the company is issuing three new data sheets. These indicate the modifications required to bring the vehicles up to the higher weights while conforming to the axle-spacing dimensions of the amended Construction and Use Regulations (CM June 9).

The Middlewich service centre offers free quotations for these modifications and operators should contact the Technical Service Department there, quoting model and chassis number and stating whether the vehicles concerned are tippers or highway models.

Where conversions have been undertaken on existing vehicles, ERF charges £15 for inspection and test at Middlewich, or £25 if an engineer has to visit the operator's premises.

The vehicle illustrated has a Gardner 6LXB 180 bhp engine, six-speed David Brown gearbox and Kirkstall D.480 double-drive 18-ton rear bogie. When bought in November 1971 it was specified with the intention to increase the gvw to 28 tons as soon as the regulations permitted, and the conversion has been possible at low cost and with a weight penalty of only lcwt. It is used mainly for coal and roadbuilding materials and has a 28ft 6in. body built by H. Wood and Co, Sheffield.

ERF reminds operators that when vehicles are modified to operate at the increased weights it is necessary to complete DoE form VTG 10 and forward this with the appropriate fee to the DoE Goods Vehicle Centre at Swansea. When vehicles are modified at Middlewich, the ERF Technical Service Department completes the necessary DoE documentation.
