ANEW L100,000 workshop, depot and offices for James Hemphill Ltd., Scotland's biggest operators of road tankers, was officially opened at Polmadie, Glasgow, on Wednesday by Mr. Peter Walker, Conservative Shadow Minister of Transport.
The new depot, covering close on 1,600 facilities available for other hauliers at square yards is part of a 7-acre area which nominal charges.
provides comprehensive repair and maintenance facilities for the company's 100-plus fleet which travels over 3+ m. miles a year.
The depot has a vehicle repair workshop and an office block—with a large open yard as a hard standing for vehicles. The workshop includes four pits, two for maintenance and two for lubrication. Stores, canteen, toilets, an office and ancillary accommodation are contained in a 16 ft. wide two-floor structure. The entire building is heated by Colt oilfired space heaters.
One of the features of the new depot (less than a mile from the former garage) is a Triangle Dynamic Brake Tester similar to MoT machines—the first to be installed in a commercial operator's premises in Scotland.

James Hemphill Ltd., employs 120 drivers with 24 men in the workshops and 20 in the offices. The company's tankers carry a wide variety of liquids, powders and liquefied petroleum gases. The liquids range from foodstuffs, distilled water and refined chemicals to lubricating oils, sulphuric acid, caustic soda, bitumen, electrode pitch and sludge. The majority of the artics are fitted with the Hope anti-jackknife device.
Six years ago the company joined the Coast Lines Group which provided further capital for expansion of the fleet. For the official opening, Hemphill's and three other haulage companies in Coast Lines Group had special-purpose vehicles on show.
