Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THEquestion of instituting shift rates of payment for passenger transport workers whose duties are. on a rotating basis was considered by the National Joint Industrial Council on June 14. and the National Council for the Omnibus Industry on June 15.

Application for shift rates was made by the Transport and General Workers Un on to the N.0 01 and the National Council for the Road Passenger Transport Industry. The matter has now been referred to the wages committee of the N.J.I.C. and the conciliation committee of the N.C.0.1. for recommendations,

SAMPLE paint brushes carried by it commercial traveller in a utility vehicle resulted in the vehicle being classified in the goods category by magistrates at Stratford-on-Avon last week. The driver of the vehicle was charged with exceeding the speed limit of 30 m.p.h. in the van, and was fined £1.

Police evidence stated that the van was driven at 50-55 m.p.h., and the defence held that the brushes, carried in suitcases, were the effects of the defendant's occupation. The vehicle had not been bought with the idea solely of carrying goods. Under the circumstances. stated the magistrates, the van was used as a goods vehicle.

FORTHCOMING APPEALS

. Ft July, the Appeal Tribunal Will hear Ione appeal in London, one in Sheffield and two in Edinburgh. On July 4-5, the Tribunal will be sitting at Halifax House, Strand, London, W.C.2, and will hear an appeal by R. E. Hodgham (Hauliers), Ltd., Walkers Garages (Birchington), Ltd., Sayers. • Ltd., R. F1, Sims (Margate), Ltd., and F. L. Pettman, Ltd., against a decision of the South-eastern Deputy Licensing Authority. Mr. G. F. Websper is the respondent. On July 18. sitting at the Town Hall. Sheffield, the Tribunal will hear the appeal of H. J. Tuffnell. Ltd.. against a decision of the Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority. On July 19. sitting at The Land Court, I, Grosvenor Crescent, Edinburgh, the appeal of

J. A. Ward against a decision of the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority will be heard, the Railway and Road Haulage Executives being the respondents, On July 20, the Railway Executive and Hay's Wharf Cartage Co., Ltd., are appealing against a decision of the Scottish Licensing Authority. Messrs. John Wight and Co. are the respondents.

COST OF MUNICIPAL TRANSPORT

THE increased price of fuel will cost Sunderland Corporation another £16,506 a year. Of this, £13.000 will have to be borne by the transport undertaking and the remaining £3.506 will have to come out of rates.

Gateshead Corporation transport and cleansing departments will have to find a further £3,564 a year as a result of the higher cost of fuel.

East Suffolk County Council has received a report from the County surveyor in which it was estimated that increased charges by contractors. phis the increased cost of operating the Council's vehicles, would amount to £3,934 a year. This almost equals a Id. rate.

R.H.E. FAILS TO CARRY ON

LAST October the Road Haulage -La Executive acquired the carrier's business operated by Messrs. R. and G. Ritchie, Forfar, which, for 18 years. had run two vehicles daily between Dundee, Kirriemuir and Forfar. After nine months of operation the RA-LE. has informed customers that the service is to end on June 30.

Over 100 users of the service are implicated, and they have been told. that the "volume of traffic between Forfar. Kirriemuir,•Dundee and Arbroath does not -justify the continuance of competitive services." Representations are being made to the Ministry of Transport.
