HIGHER PROFIT OF SCAMMELL LORRIES TRADING of Scarnmell Lorries, Ltd.,

for the year 1943 shows a gross profit of £353,183, compared with £303,228 in the previous year After providing £211,750 for taxation and £119,250 for general expenses, depreciation, interest, . etc.-, the net profit comes out at £22,183, which is £2,625 more than in the previous year. A dividend of 8i per cent., less tax, for the year takes £6,854, whilst general reserve receives £14,000, bringing it up to £96,000. The amount to be carried forward is £15,626, against £15,297 brought in.

ROAD TRANSPORT FOR HARVESTERS

ARRANGEMENTS for conveying the numerous additional farm workers required for harvestMg have been simplified by an 1V1.0.W.T. Order which took effect on June 19 and will remain in force until November 30. This allows the use of motor goods vehicles for transporting these workers without the use of p.s.v. and road-service permits.

Insurers have agreed to similar arrangements to cover as were fixed for 1943. The normal rates are 10s, per vehicle not exceeding two months; Sc. per vehicle per month after.

CO-OPERATION OF C-LICENCE OPERATORS SOUGHT '

AN appeal has been issued to C1icence operators in the Noilhwestern Region for their co-operation in a regional ancillary haulage scheme to assist the M.O.W.T. by local haulage of essential traffic. The scheme, which Major F. S. ,Eastwood is introducing in his capacity as acting North-western Transport Commissioner, is on the same lines as that in his own region— the North-eastern—and in Scotland, which have previously been mentioned in this journal.

DEATH OF PIRELLI DIRECTOR

WE regret to record the death, in his 85th year, of Mr. Alfred Joseph Cohn, whose association with the motor industry dates back to 1909, when he was appointed a director of Pirelli, Ltd., which position he held until his death. He represented the company on the Pneumatic Tyre Committee Of the S.M.M.T. from 1921 to 1929.

ANOTHER CALL FOR QUICKER WINDING-UP OF ASSOCIATIONS

THE first area committee for the Traders' Road Transport Association in the East Midlands has been formed and Mr, S. C. Bond, of Stanton Ironworks Co., Ltd., has been elected chairman; the vice-chairman is Mr. E. S. Warth, of Nottingham.

The Committee unanimously endorsed the resolution of • the area executive committee of. the East Midland R.H.A. in the following terms:—

" This committee regrets to note the fact that arrangements have not, in several cases, been made for the calling of the winding-up meeting of the various associations, or for the signing of the Amalgamation agreement, declares the need for immediate completion to be imperative, and affirms" its determination, in the event of the national arrangements being much longer delayed, to apply itself to the task of achieving complete association unity within the area."
