Southwark Favours Container System of Refuse Collection.

The works committee of Southwark Borough Council has had under consideration the introduction of the container system for the collection of refuse from blocks of dwellings. This system is, of course, devised especially to meet the needs of establishments where there is an amount of refuse to be cleared which is considerably in excess of that acctmutated by the ordinary household. It also meets the modern requirements of dustless loading, as well as providing a time-saving method of collection. On, arrival at the council's depot, the contents of the containers are tipped, the containers washed and returned to the chassis, to be taken to another block of dwellings to replace full bins.

Negotiations have been in progress for some time with various property owners in Southwark, and the committee states that a number of them has undertaken to purchase containers in the event of the council deciding to go forward with the scheme. In addition, the housing committee has resolved to install the system at the Doddington Grove estate. It is estimated that 28 containers will be required to work the scheme. The containers are anticipated to last for about 10 years, and it was proposed that the council should maintain them free of charge for that period.

The committee recommends that the council approves the principle of the adoption of the container system of refuse collection. The committee favours the purchase of an S.D. Freighter chassis,.a bin truck and 28 containers.
