STRONG PUBLIC OPPOSITION TO LICENCE REFUSALS

Municipal and Commercial Interests Protest Against Western Commissioners' Decision.. CONSIDERABLE opposition has been aroused amongst local residents, and business people in the Western Traffic Area against the refusal by the Traffic Commissioners of licences for certain stage and express services." The Bridgwater Traders Association has passed a resolution on the subject.

One member pointed out that out of 11 applications considered at Taunton recently only one was granted in full, one was granted in part, four were adjourned, two services were to stop in November, and three were absolutely refused. "In nearly every ease," be said, "the applications were opposed by the big combines." Re referred particularly to the refusal of the application in respect of a bus service between Burnham-on-Sea and Holford, and he said that, Bridgwater being a market town which depended upon the country folk being able to visit it easily and without undue expense, it was in the direct interests of the traders to do their utmost to prevent bus services from being taken off the routes. It is understood that in the villages on the west side of the town of Bridgwater petitions have been signed for the reinstatement of the Burnham and Holford service.

Burnham-on-Sea Urban District Council also has gone into the question of the refusal to Messrs. Gratton Bros. of licences to continue the bus services between Burnbam and Bristol and between Holford Glen and Brean DOWD.

The council has recommended that the Ministry of Transport be asked to have the applications reconsidered, and be informed that the loss of these services would cause serious inconvenience to the town. The council ask that the Traffic Commissioners be notified of the council's request. The Chairman of the Commissioners has denied that Bridg water will suffer and states that the application refused in respect of the South Grafton route was Made by a newcomer, whereas existing services were considered adequate.
