• New tests confirm that Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines produce significantly lower emissions than state-of-the-art diesels.
The back-to-back tests at Millbrook Proving Ground set a Euro-2 ultra-low-sulphur diesel-powered tractive unit fitted with particulate traps against a lean-burn Perkins TxSi CNG unit with an oxidation catalyst running on Mobil CNG.
The chosen test route was Millbrook's HGV Cycle, which is designed to replicate realworld conditions; the test vehicles were taken from Safeway's distribution fleet which includes 10 CNG vehicles. As well as reduced emissions, noise levels at low engine speeds were considerably lower on the gas powered truck.
Safeway director Lawrence Christenson says that these results endorse Safeway's move towards CNG-fuelled trucks on environmental grounds.
