under-3.5tonne van, I often wonder about the driving standards of others driving similar vehicles in this class. I have come to the conclusion that van driving is a young man's job, with most of the bravado that goes hand-in-hand with being a young man.
Compound this with schedule deadlines and management pressure, and you have a recipe for trouble. You can imagine my displeasure at Volkswagen's change to a 120mph (190km/h) speedometer on their under3.5 tonne range on the LT chassis. It's asking for trouble!
With this sort of insensitivity from manufacturers, I would rather put up with a tachograph for safety's sake. In money terms, this means higher insurance, maintenance and man-hour costs, but what price
can you place on life itself? Whatever answer VW has for this piece of folly — and, no doubt, there will be a lame
excuse — all of us in transport should jump on, and stamp out, ignorance of this nature at the outset: it can lead nowhere but to a fatal end.
