Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

GULATIONS have been laid before Parliament to extend the ible tyre tread standards to the entire surface area with effect m November 1.

Transport Under Secretary Lynda Chalker said last week: "These changes will help to improve road safety and the enforcement of the Regulations, at an acceptable cost. More extensive changes would not be justified on the present evidence."

Further consultations with interested organisations will be held after a two-year trial period with the new Regulations, she added.

At a later date, the Government also plans to bring in an Economic Commission for Europe international requirement that replacement tyres should meet the same standards as those fitted originally to a vehicle.

And it will require retreaded tyres to comply with British Standard BS AU144b of 1977.

While tyre manufacturing interests have been calling for a 1mm minimum tyre tread depth across the entire surface of a tyre, the British Rubber Manufacturers' Association has nonetheless welcomed the new Regulations.
