Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE AUTHORISED dealer network of DAF Trucks carries a cross-section of the normal fastmoving parts.

On a high-specification truck the proportion of parts with a long life and consequently a lower turnover rate, is high. The dealer network is not expected to carry large stocks of such parts. On the other hand, DAF Trucks realise that for efficient operation of a vehicle it is of the utmost importance for every part to be available without delay, anywhere at any time.

How does the operator then obtain this service?

From the authorised dealer list, all of the parts departments operate the same system to integrate with that at Marlow and the factory in Eindhoven.

1 When requesting any part, quote the chassis number of the vehicle (this is situated on a plate on the nearside, below the doorshut).

2 The parts man then checks the parts catalogue for the part requested by the operator. If one or more parts codes are listed, follow the remaining procedure, if not the part can be obtained through the procedures available.

3 If there is more than one code listed, the parts man then checks the identification card (assuming the vehicle was purchased from the dealer visited) for details of vehicle specification and then selects the part code. If no identification card is available at the dealer visited, the parts man contacts the central information system at Marlow for the relevant details. It is an advantage if the driver keeps a copy of the identification card in his vehicle at all times.

4 Once the part code has been identified from the catalogue the stocks card is checked for in or out of stock at the dealership. If the part is not in stock the parts department at Marlow is telexed with V.O.R. instructions (indicating the urgency) and the method of dispatch required. On this basis, assuming the part is in stock the part will be with the dealer by mid morning of the following day, provided the order reaches Marlow by 16.30hrs.

5 If ordertelexortelephoned through after 16.30hrs and requests collection the part will be available from that moment throughout the night.

6 If the order is requested after close of business (1800 hours) the dealer parts managers have contact points with a call-out system (only for collection) and this service is available all night and at weekends.

7 If the vehicle is off the road and not in a DAF Trucks dealer, use the DAFaid system. DAFaid will then contact the nearest DAF Truck dealer and the parts supply system comes into operation. If for some reason the dealer is unavailable in the area, DAFaid will contact the parts department at Marlow with the 24-hour system (Between 1800 to 0800 hours parts must be collected. Weekdays only).

8 Should the situation arise when a V.O.R. is not in stock at Marlow, the dealer will be immediately advised and the following system comes into action.

AIR LIFT

The factory in Eindhoven is contacted and instructed to air lift the part on the first flight from Amsterdam to Heathrow. Or should the part be required in the North or in Scotland it could be flown to Manchester or Glasgow.

DAF Trucks will never accept a situation when a part cannot be located to get a vehicle back on the road. If necessary an item will be taken from the production line and flown into the UK.

With rationalisation of parts throughout the range, the stockholding problems are greatly reduced, however. Eleven-thousand lines are held at Marlow with a complete range held in Eindhoven. This obviously includes many that are for vehicles made before 1973.

To assist the operator all over the world, all DAF Trucks sub

sidiaries are linked directly with the computor at the parts centre in Eindhoven by the tele-processing method. This system makes it possible to check immediately whether a particular part is in stock, A button is then depressed to issue a pick order to the parts warehouse.

The only limiting factor is the computer line printer, which has a capacity of 1,100 lines a minute. A part ordered before 1500 hours is delivered to any part of Europe by the next morning. Within 24 hours a part could be available anywhere in the world.

This sophisticated computer system insures normal stock items are maintained at the required stock levels. It identifies demand patterns; the required stock order levels; and special information on the dealer's own specific parts mix for his area. Most DAF Trucks dealers will be linked to the parts computer system in Marlow, thus maintaining a prompt service to the operator.

OAF Trucks are convinced that an excellent parts supply is an additional guarantee for a low price per mile—that is why so much attention is paid to it.
