COMMERCIAL vehicles sales in June were down by 1.9 per cent on the previous year — but this still represents the continuing improvement in sales over the past six months.
Figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders this week show that the importers' share of the market was up by 3.6 per cent to 13.8 per cent with Bedford showing up as the fastest improving British manufacturer, In the heavy trucks field Volvo sales were 222 compared with Mercedes at 130. Ford sold 1,054 heavy trucks, Leyland 938 and Bedford overtook Leyland to sell 1,036.
Bedford managed to overtake Leyland not only in the figures for June but also in the figures for the previous six months, and Bedford now hard on the heels of Ford, which has confirmed its position as market leader.
