• Road hauliers will try to support the CBI's call for wage restraint but there are many factors in such a decision—not least the activities of the trade unions which so profoundly affect costs in a labour-intensive industry. This comment was made by Mr George Newman, director-general of the Road Haulage Association, at a Court Dinner of the Worshipful Company of Carmen in London on Wednesday.
Mr Newman also quoted figures to show that the Common Market was the world's largest trading power and would, if enlarged to 10 members, have nearly one-third of world external trade. Said Mr Newman: "Whatever the initial difficulties, this seems to me to be a good thing to be in on ."
