• Hauliers are likely to face greater restrictions in congested town centres following Government plans to allow local authorities to set strict traffic reduction targets.
Later this week Roads Minister John Watts is expected to launch a policy shift that will not only allow councils to set targets, but will force them to do so.
In the past the Government
has always opposed such targets.
The move is partly a response to a private members bill by Liberal Democrat Don Foster that proposes Draconian measures to reduce traffic levels.
The environmental campaign group Friends of the Earth has had considerable input to Foster's bill, which has attracted cross-party support.
Although most of the measures would be aimed at reducing car journeys, LGVs could face restrictions on delivery times and increased use of weight limits.
