The First Lady
ELIZABETH SHAW has done her bit for women's lib this week with her appointment as the first woman assistant manager of a I3RS branch.
Mrs Shaw will share some of the responsibility for the handling of 2000, empty units and 250 loaded trailers at the Bromford Lane, Birmingham, depot.
Another new face at BRS Birmingham is Mike Rowley, 30, who has been appointed manager of the Bromford Mills branch. Mr Rowley has been with BRS for four years and has moved in from Swindon where he was also manager. In the South East Brian Riley, 39, has been appointed district manager for National Carriers. Mr Riley will be responsible for parts of Sussex and South East London, and Kent.
Wilkinson Transport Ltd has also been making changes at the top. Malcolm MacDonald, who was group rates and contracts manager, has become marketing manager. He will be replacing Eric Walters, who is moving to head the new Specialised Transport Division of the Lex Service Group of which Wilkinson is a member.
Mr MacDonald joined Wilkinson from Collins Express Parcel Service, now part of United Carriers. It also has a new national sales manager in George Wall-Norris, who was southern region head of sales.
S. B. R.. Francks becomes network manager and the post of operations manager goes to Malcolm Howard, former Golden Wonder distribution manager, and he will be assisting D. R. Black in control of dayto-day running.
And moving up is Gerry Bentley, depot manager, who becomes the general manager of the Rochdale depot.
Jim Day, for 47 years a wellknown figure in the Pye TMC company, has joined Otway and Golder Ltd as a director. He is a fellow and council member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and was chairman of the London Division of the Industrial Transport Association.
Michael Bustard, a pioneer of the roll-on/roll-off system has been retained as consultant by Wacro Lines Ltd, the new direct ro-ro ferry service to Nigeria leaving at the end of this month.
Mr Bustard was formerly with Atlantic Steam Navigation Ltd for over 25 years, and for the past 15 was director and general manager.
Reg Oldham has recently been presented with the Ryland Trophy for the top commercial driver by the Post Office chairman, Sir William Ryland. He has also won his own fleet driving competition and this year received the ROSPA award for 14 consecutive years of safe driving.
We record with regret the death of Jack Baulch, managing director of Chard Transport, Somerset, at the weekend. Mr 13aulch had been in the haulage business for many years.
On the passenger front Bernard Rootham has been appointed general manager of the Thames Valley and Aldershot Bus Company. He will be moving from East Yorkshire Motor Services where he is general manager.'
