A 1-1A-ULlER'S system of sending out rk relief drivers in eau, to pick up lorries, enabling the original drivers to return home by car, was closely questioned at Spilsby (Lines) Magistrates' Court on Monday. Ernest Broomfield, a lorry driver; employed by Shaw Bros., Friskney, near Wainfleet, was accused of not having 10 consecutive hours' rest in 24.

Shaw Bros., produce merchants, were summoned for permitting two offences.

The prosecution said that after Broomfield had completed his permitted hours of driving at Lincoln on July 10, and at Wetherby on July 11, he handed his lorry to a relief driver and returned home in his own car which the relief driver had brought. He then had to drive 45 and 120 miles, respectively.

In these circumstances, the journey home was a continuation of his driving.

Albert Edward Thorpe, office manager for Shaw Bros., said they had operated

the system since 1952. It had been adopted at the. suggestion of the drivers themselves, for it enabled them to get home instead of having to sleep out.

Mr. G. G. A. Whitehead, defending, submitted that once the driver had left his lorry he was no longer under the direction of his employer. There was nothing in law which directed how his spare time should be spent, and he contended there was nothing illegal in the system.

After three hours the two summonses against Broomfield were dismissed.

Mr. R. S. Whitby, prosecuting, applied for an adjournment sine die of the summons against Shaw Bros., a similar summons against another driver, and a summons against Shaw Bros. for permitting this offence, so that he could take further instructions. This was granted.

NEW FACTORY SITES FAR FROM TRUNK ROADS

THE need for an improvement in transport in relation to the spread of industry and for better. roads was emphasized at the annual dinner of the Sheffield and District Section of the Institute of Transport at Sheffield on Monday.

The Master Cutler, Mr. J. Neill, said: We have only touched the fringe of the road problem. If the Government wish industry to start up branch factories, especially where there is a high rate of unemployment, they should do something rapidly about providing the right means of access." The proposed sites for factories were nowhere near trunk roads.

EXPLAINING " KERB " CAMPAIGN

TO gain initial support for the "Kerb Space is Precious" campaign, Mr. F. Milton, northern divisional secretary of the Traders' Road Transport Association, has called a meeting of all highway authorities in his area. He will explain the objects of the campaign and describe how it has been received in London.

Mr. Milton's idea was discussed by T.R.T.A. officials from all parts of the country when they met in London, on Tuesday, to plan the extension of the campaign.
