II The second major roadside check on hazardous goods trucks in three weeks has confirmed the worst fears of enforcement officers-80% of them were breaking the law. The first check showed a 76% defect rate (CM 16-22 February).
The second exercise checked 36 chemical trucks at St Andrews Road in Avonmouth on 7 February. Police at the check found seven trucks without fire extinguishers; seven drivers untrained on chemical spillages and seven drivers without eye protection.
Of those stopped, four drivers could he prosecuted for tacho• graph offences and one for carrying an insecure load of liquid propane gas canisters.
