A LARGE number of services provided by the Department of Transport to the bus industry does not fully cover their costs, Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley has told MPs.
Quizzed by Tory backbencher Tim Eggar about which services covered their costs, Mr Ridley said that public service vehicle type and initial fitness testing, road service licences, public vehicle service driver licensing and testing and vehicle and component approvals all cost more than £100,000, but failed to cover their costs in 1983/84.
However, he pointed out that the cost of public service vehicle type and initial fitness testing had since gone up to ensure that they met the full cost.
Mr Ridley also revealed that public service vehicle operator licences and vehicle testing made a profit for the Department.
