Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HISTORICALLY, lorry-mounted cranes were fitted to logor brick-carrying vehicles. Now many other operators find that productivity can be increased with this type of tool. There are many manufacturers to chose from and most make a large range of equipment.

Before choosing, it is necessary to be aware of individual requirements. Thl reach of the boom, angle of operation and lifting capacity is basic information The weight and size of the unit, when in a stowed position, will also be factor: to take into account.

Don't be put off because of specialised application. The many attachments available make most cranes versatile machines.

Atlas Hydraulic Loader Ltd, Vere Road, Blackwood, Strathclyde.

ATLAS makes lorry-mounted cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 660kg (1,455Ibs) at 3m (9.8ft) reach to specialist cranes for heavy-duty application with a capacity to lift 3,900kg (8,5981b) at 3.2m (10.4ft).

Most types have hydraulically-extending jibs, while some have special attachments for loading tree-trunks, bricks, scrap or just for grab operating.

The Atlas 3006R is a travelling rail-mounted crane often used on semi-trailers. Powered by a Deutz diesel engine, It is self-contained, has a slewing angle of 390°, a reach up to 9.4m (30.8ft) and a maximum lifting capacity of 3,300kg (7,2751b) at 1.9m.

Other models such as the 3510 are used in conjunction with stabilizers. This model has a slowing range of 410'.

Challenger Handling, Fakenham Industrial Estate, Fakenham, Norfolk. CHALLENGER Handling is the vehicle load handling division of Hunton International Ltd, suppliers of axles, suspensions and hydraulic cylinders as original equipment to the commercial vehicle market.

The CH 1600X and 2000X demountable units are designed for use on vehicles above 4.5 tons gvw. Construction lifting operations regulations allow their use on construction sites without an automatic safe workload indicator. An overload valve restricts the units' use to a given capacity. Both models have six jib-length positions — adjusted manually.

The 1600X ranges from 1.587kg (3.520Ib) at 1.5m (4.9ft) to 970kg (2,140Ibs) at 2.4m (8ft), while the 2000X has a capacity of 2,000kg (4,40b1b) to 1,211kg (2,670Ib) at maximum reach. Both units weigh around 250kg (550Ib), have a closed height of 1,5m (5ft) and can be operated through a turning circle of 360 with a maximum lift height of 2.8m (9.3ft).

Hydraulic pressure is generated either by a manual pump or by a 12V or 24V power pack.

One of the largest is the A140 with a lifting capacity of 1,650kg (3,6381b) at 8.4m (27.5ft) maximum jib radius. The stabilising legs can be operated individually to accommodate rough ground. Slewing hydraulics are piped separately off other functions, allowing a slewing circle of 400' .

Lift height is in access of 1 Urn (32.8ft) but the articulated arms fold to within 2.3m (7.5ft) when not in use. Including the weight of the stabilizer legs but excluding the pump and pto, the unit weighs 2,600kg (5,7321b).

Other smaller versions are produced down to the A30 unit, which can handle up to 2,400kg (5,291Ib). This model has manual extensions for the jib available up to 1 Urn (32.8ft) radius.

Harvey Frost & Co Ltd, Dunmow Road, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. HARVEY FROST, part of the Brockhouse Group produces only one type of lorry crane.

The jib is 'adjustable to three positions and gives a maximum reach of 1.7m (5.5ft) with lifting capacity of 600kg (1 ,3201b). At minimum reach, 1 .1m (3.5ft), the lifting capacity is increased to 1 ,000kg (2,2001b). The inclusion of a 0.9m (3ft) high-tensile steel chain, with a latch-type safety hook, permits maximum use of the vertical travel of the jib.

The Easiload can be supplied with a manual pump in place of the electric motor driven unit if required.

HIAB, George Cohen Machinery Ltd, Mechanical Handling Division, 23/25 Sunbeam Road, London NW10.

HIAB's range extends from the batteryor manually-powered Mini-loader, weighing a total of 1 50kg (330Ib) complete, to the 1870, built to lift up to 10 tons at a time.

A very popular model is the 650 with its double telescopic hydraulic extension boom which has a travel of 3m (9.8ft). Lifting capacity ranges from 3,400kg (6,5001b) at 1.7m (5.6ft) to 280kg (620Ib) at full reach of 9.8m (32.1ft).

The complete loader with outrigger legs and oil tank weighs 1,054kg (2,3201b) and folds down to 1 .95m (6.3ft) high and 2.3m (7.5ft) wide. Lyka Cranes Ltd, PO Box 86, 382 Blackpool Road, Preston, Lancashire.

THE LYKA 5.5 and 7 models are made in the UK and all others are imported from Denmark.

The British Lyka 5.5 lifts over a ton at 5m (17ft) radius and stretches to 6.4m (21 ft). Power is taken from the vehicle pto but a separate diesel pack is available where an independent power source is needed. Rack and pinion drive slows the crane for operation through an angle of 410 degrees.

The Lyka 40, the largest in the range, will lift loads up to 4,500kg (9,9211b) and is mounted on a 4.57m (15ft) subframe to spread the load over a long legth of the vehicle's chassis. Three hydraulicallyactuated telescopic sections give a maximum radius of 9m (29.5 ft) HAP Cranes Ltd, Farthing Road, Ipswich, Suffolk.

HAP's 610 model in standard form has a reach of 5m (16.4ft) but with two jib extensions can be increased to 7.5m (24.6ft) and still have a lifting capacity of 500kg (1,1001b), which at 2.1m (6.75ft) improves to 2,680kg (5,910Ib). This is the lightweight machine of the range — its own weight with stabilizers is 975kg (2,1501b1.

HAP makes a range of 22 models and claims to meet every mobile lifting requirement James Jones & Sons Ltd, Broomage Avenue, Larbert, Stirlingsh ire.

THE HIGHLAND Bear Nova 10/10 is marketed by .a company of vehicle builders and forestry engineers. This machine offers a reach of 8.2rn (27ft) but folds completely behind the cab, and has a 10ton / metre capacity.

We!ford Truck Bodies Ltd, Hainge Road, Twidale, War ley, Worcestershire.

WELFORD, first and foremost a body builder and tipping gear specialist, is the UK importer of the Italian Pesci range of loader.

The Muscle-Pesci machines cater mainly for the highercapacity market, with the P666 model as the best-seller. The design of the triple-stage top ram is said to be unique.

Extended to maximum length of 11.05m (36.25ft), it gives a safe working load capacity of 321kg (7081b). Six valve controls, each side of the loader, allow for a spare hydraulic accessory.

Among the accessories available are an orange peel grab, brick and block clamps, rota tors, timber grapples, palle fork, personal basket and top seat operator's position. stewing angle of 360 degree allows all-round operation while in the fold-down positior parks across the chassis. All-u1 weight of the unit, includinc mounting frame, is 1,980kc (4,4251b).

Pa!finger (UK) Ltd, PO Box 35, Larbert, Stirlingshire. PALFINGER's twenty years of building lorry-mounted cranes had culminated in its present range of light, powerful machines.

The PK 6700, at the lighter end of the range, gives an outreach from 2m to 11.25m (6.6ft to 37ft), with corresponding lifting capacities from 3,250kg to 450kg (7,1561b to 9911b).

This unit, weighing 1,210kg (2,6671b) has a slewing angle of 400. Hydraulic controls are duplicated on each side of the crane, which is fully protected by overload and safety valves.
