• The twin tube of the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel between Wallasey and Liverpool will open at the end of December. Completion has been put back 11 weeks because of the effects of last year's contractors' strike and the time cannot be made up. The first tube was opened by the Queen in June, 1971. It now takes single-lane traffic each way, but when the second tube provides two extra lanes the first will be one-way.
Construction of the road deck in tube two has been completed. The Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee is to be asked again by the transport committee of Merseyside Chamber of Commerce to introduce books of tickets at a discount of up to 10 per cent for regular tunnel users. Previous requests have been turned down.
In its new approach the committee is to point out that a 10 per cent discount is offered to regular users of the Severn Bridge, through the purchase of books of tickets.
