5-TON lorry being produced in X Hungary has a seven-seater cab th sliding roof. The driving cornrtment is so constructed that, by raisg the back seat, sleeping accommodain for two people is available.

It is only since the war that Hungary s been able to compete in the corn.trcial-vehicle market, as German mpetition kept the Hungarian motor lustry in a fairly rudimentary state. 1949, however, 3,200 goods vehicles were produced, and by 1954, output is expected to reach 9,000 units a year.

Details of a general-purpose 5-tonner, published in the Hungarian Press, indicate that development is along sound, conventional lines. The Mavag B-5. which is made by one of the biggest engineering concerns in Hungary, has a six-cylindered oil engine having a bore of 105 mm. and a stroke of 140 mm.; the piston-swept volume being 7,273 c.c. The output of this unit is 105 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. No engine-torque figures are given.

This power unit is produced in large numbers, as it is used also in the maker's buses and coaches.

The engine has replaceable liners and a seven-bearing forged-steel crankshaft. A separately mounted five-speed gearbox is driven by a short shaft having a universal joint at each end. The pedal controls hydraulic brakes on all wheels and the lever takes effect on only the rear wheels.

Other items in the specification include semi-elliptic springs for the suspension system, with single springs at the front and double springs at the rear, and 10 by 20-in. tyres.

The vehicle is of cab-over-engine design, the large windows making for good visibility. The general dimensions are: Wheelbase, 14 ft.; maximum length, 25 ft.: and maximum width, 8 ft.

Apart from the somewhat unusual size of the cab in relation to the body dimensions, the general appearance of the vehicle is conventional. It would seem that payload capacity has been sacrificed in order that the driver and his mate can be assured of sleeping accommodation when the vehicle is employed on long-distance work. The cab is provided with a sliding roof so that the compartment can be kept COW under high-temperature conditions, as frequently obtain in Hungary.
