Bid to Restrict Loading and Unloading.

The highways committee of Durham County Council is to apply to the Minister of Transport for an Order under Section 46 of the Road Traffic Act. 1930, prohibiting the loading or unloading or standing of vehicles exceeding 1 ton in weight, in Silver Street, Saddler Street and Elvet Bridge, in the City of Durham, between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on all days except Sundays.

Civic Visit to Albion Works.

On February 16, the Rt. Hon. Lord Provost of Glasgow, Mr. Alex. B. Swan, and members of the corporation visited the works of Albion Motors, Ltd., at Scotstoun. In welcoming the party, Mr. N. 0. Fulton, chairman of the company, said that the concern started

business in 1899 and had grown to considerable dimensions. At the present time there are between 1,600 and 1,700 workers at Scotstoun, the total pay roll, when depots are included, being about 2,000.

The party visited tile various departments in the works and saw Albion components and chassis in different stages of machining and assembly. A display of interesting machines was arranged, including a 1901 Albion, a mobile ophthalmic unit for the Palestine Government and a new-, tower wagon for Glasgow Corporation.

Trolleybus Extensions at Ipswich.

The transport committee of Ipswich Corporation has authorized further trolleybus extensions at a cost of £7,500.

Weak Bridges: Railways...to be Approached.

At a conference held, last week, between hauliers' representatives, the road board of Aberdeen County Council and the eight Aberdeenshire burghs, it was agreed to approach the railway companies regarding restrictions proposed for certain bridges.

Lower Tolls Wanted for Menai Bridge.

Bangor City Council has decided that, having regard to the heavy taxes already paid by road users, the Ministry of Transport be approached with a view to obtaining a reduction to a nominal sum of, say, 10s. per annum, in the price of contract tickets for the Menai Suspension Bridge.

A reduction to a nominal sum of the daily tolls on all vehicles is also sought. B23 EFFORT TO MAKE GOVERNORS COMPULSORY.

Monmouthshire Standing Joint (Police) Committee is to request the Minister of Transport to give it powers to order' the compulsory fitting of sealed governors to commercial-vehicle engines to prevent the vehicles from exceeding the speed limits. The chief constable has expressed the view that if the speed of vehicles was mechanically governed the police patrols could be much reduced. • It is understood that, in addition to seeking powers for itself, the committee suggests that the Minister should. give similar powers to all county authorities. '

Standardizing a Ticket Machine.

Clayton Dewandre Co., Ltd., Lincoln, advises us that the transport department of Lincoln Corporation has decided to standardize the Clayton-Harris Iierorneter throughout the whole of its

passenger-transport system. This interesting ticket machine is manufactured by the company, which informs us that the appliance gave good results in trials under operating conditions ofall kinds.

Ealing's Concession to Hauliers.

The highways committee of Ealing Corporation has authorized the borough surveyor to accept 24 hours' notice from haulage contractors, instead of the four clear days' notice required by the Motor Vehicles (Authorization of Special Types) No. 1 Order, 1931, subject to their agreeing to indemnify the corporation in respect of damage caused if the vehicles and loads be not . in accordance with the requirements of the regulations.
