Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

cutting at Red Star

• Up to 80 subcontracted hauliers working for the British Rail parcels subsidiary Red Star face an uncertain future as BR this week announces its intention to slash costs at the company.

"All three elements have to be looked at with a view to getting them down—no holds are barred," a Red Star spokesman says.

The search to improve Red Star's profitability follows the Government's failure to sell the

£46m turnover company to the private sector at an acceptable price. Before pushing the company back on the market, probably in the second half of next year, Red Star's management is charged with turning round its financial performance.

For the year ending April 1993 it made a Dm loss.
