Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Transfleet is to equip all its depot's workshops with computers to allow fitters instant access to a vehicle's service history. They will also serve as a time log.

The process will take about a year with all depots networked to allow all details on a vehicle to be displayed regardless of where it was last serviced.

The company has invested heavily in computerisation which it says has given benefits in identifying operational and mechanical problems with vehicles, analysing workshop efficiency by depot, preventing stores shortfalls and specifying the correct vehicle for each contract.

According to Terry Irwin, Transfleet's marketing and sales director, demonstrating such a tight control over servicing costs convinces a lot of potential customers.

On the subject of manufacturers' diagnostic computers, Transfleet's managing director, Brian Templar, says if the manufacturer won't release the equipment it will buy a different make of truck (see feature, page 17).

Transfleet runs 6,200 vehicles under contract and 1,300 on truck rental with 27 depots and 35 workshops at authorised agents.
