"WE MUST stop the rot in public transport," said Transport Minister William Rodgers on the publication of the Transport Bill.
He continued: "The decline has been steady and, unless some fresh steps are taken by the Government, we can see our public transport system very seriously eroded, more particularly in the urban areas and smaller towns."
He said county councils may not like the added responsibilities being thrust upon them by the Government, concerning the planning and financing of bus routes and schemes, but they would just have to accept it.
On the question of the financial restructuring of the National Freight Corporation, which receives a lot of attention in the Bill, Mr Rodgers said: "The details of the financial reconstruction of the NFC are important — a controversial subject.
"What we are trying to do is put the NFC, within the next three years, on a foundation from which it will prosper and grow."
Mr Rodgers went on to say he hoped there would be an end to "cross subsidisation within the NFC" and that National Carriers, "which are the difficult part," would be put "on a much firmer footing."
