Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANNOUNCING conversion kits for vehicles ".• having to comply with the interim braking standards in 1968, Fodens Ltd. says all its vehicles now on the road should be able to meet the footbrake requirements—providing that the brakes have been properly maintained and the right type of linings used.

• With regard to the secondary brakes—the handbrake can be used—Fodens says that where its vehicles have air brakes and a transmission handbrake these will also meet the regulations— provided the transmission brake is again properly maintained and has the correct lining.

But on chassis with air brakes for the service brakes and a Neate cable-operated handbrake, some conversion is necessary and Fodens recommend two alternatives according to the type of vehicle involved.

A kit reference SC510 is available for four-, sixor eight-wheel DFA models, It includes an additional air reservoir, valve, brackets and so on. In addition parts are needed to convert singlediaphragm brake chambers to triple diaphragm on at least half the number of wheels on the vehicle. With the SC510 kit there is a hand control valve for independent operation of the added secondary system.

The second system is for tractive units and this again consists of various parts including reservoir, valves and brackets but the difference is that an extra relay valve and a semi-trailer coupling and flexible hose are provided so that, if required, the vehicle can be converted to a threeline system to match up to trailers of the latest pattern. In this case the kit is numbered SC511 and the layout requires conversion to triplediaphragm chambers at the front axle.

So far Fodens has concerned itself with vehicles built since 1949 and on FG models fitted with older hydraulic systems, the company says

four-wheelers should meet the interim requirements while double-drive sixand eight-wheelers will also be satisfactory if a transmission handbrake can be fitted to give the required secondary brakes. With single-drive multi-wheelers the position is not clear and Fodens is examining it.

loT MEMBERSHIP 11,649

MEMBERSHIP of the Institute of Transport increased by 255 to 11,649 during the year ended September 30, according to its annual report. There were 848 successful candidates of the 1,920 who worked 5,683 graduate and associate member papers at 50 centres. Awards amounting to £2,355 were authorized from the Henry Spurrier and Sir William Chamberlain Memorial funds and the CMUA Road Transport Fellowship Fund.
