TRIO INSPECT PROPOSED BUS ROUTE
THE South Eastern Traffic Commissioners took an unusual trip at Ashford last week—along the proposed route concerned in an application by East Kent Road Car Co. Ltd.
The firm applied for a stage carriage service between Greatstone and Applelore railway station to serve an area of Kent presently covered by a rail service icheduled to cease in January. The rail :Josure has already been unsuccessfully 3pposed by the Transport Users' `Consultative Committee.
The operator's proposed route was imended on the day of the hearing to meet an abjection that a section of road between Old Ftomney and Hammond's Corner via Lydd was unsuitable for bus operation. The objectors—urban and district councils and a .atepayers' association—also wanted the .oute amended to serve Dungeness power itation, Maddison's holiday camp and the army camp at Lydd.
Mr. P. W. Dodge, traffic manager of East
Kent Road Car Co., questioned by Mr. J. Gower, for objectors, said that rail commuters were being catered for.
Mr. Gower: What about local traffic?
Mr. Dodge: The local element is not sufficient to justify a bus service.
Mr. Gower claimed that because there was no proposed Sunday service this was not a complete replacement service.
It was also claimed that the present service was inadequate to meet the needs of the 800 people at Dungeness and the ever-expanding population of Ashford.
The hearing was adjourned.
