AN application by Peter McCallum and Sons, Ltd.; of -Stirling; for additional A licences for six articulated units on "general goods in Great Britain ": cane -before the: Scottish Licensing Authority •in:. Edinburgh last week. Mr. W. F. .Quin said that an application in. the North Western area had been heard and adjourned pending the decision of the Scottish application which would be judged on the evidence given in that court alone.
. The application at Edinburgh was based on the fact that the work concerned was completely new work and that existing vehicles were fully employed. _..,
Evidence' was given of an increased output of Scottish steel „ and Mr. McCallum said that there was no scope for hiring in their .area—they had to go to GlaSgow, but no tilaigciW -firms had
vehicles. – .
Mr. McCallum said it was more economic to, operate articulated vehicles on long distance.
After severat_other witnesses had given evidence the case Was .adjOuined.
SHORT-TERM. APPLICATIONS MUST BE PUBLISHED •
DURING an inquiry at Newcastle upon Tyne last week, the Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. I. A. T. Hanlon, said that he•would no longer grant shortterm licenees in the area without the applicationfirst being .published. " In future,'!,he said, "applicants might as well apply for. their substantive licences."
. He was bearing an,applieation by I. W. Capstatf, Ltd., of Neweastle,Ito add a 24ton unladen weight-van-to their A licence in place of one of 19 cwt. at present authorized under a special A licence.
Referring-to a short-term grant' to the applicants prior to their last successful application, Mr. Hanlon said that at one time a short-term licence was granted without prejudice to the substantive application, and this had been taken to mean. as lawyers understood the words, "with out prejudice." • Directing his remarks to Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, representing Capstaff's, he continued: "You have succeeded in knocking that on the head, and none of your clients are going to get a short-term grant from me without publication; they might as well apply for theii substantive licence."
The application was granted.
£190,000 TIPPER ORDER FLEET of 100 LeylandComet CS3.2R four-wheelers is to be supplied by Ford and Slater,. Ltd., Leicester, to the Hovcringham Gravel Co., Ltd., Notts. The -order is worth £190,000 and the vehicles will have Leyland 0.350 100-b.h.p. nil engines, sixspeed gearboxes and double-rednction rear axles. The tipping gear and steel bodies are to be manufactured by Edbro-B. and E. Tippers, Ltd., Bolton. n1 •
