IN our report of the recent Smithfield 'Show, brief reference was made to an addition to the Fordson range of machines, in the shape of the Utilicon van, a conversion of the Fordson 5-cwt. machine. In view of its interesting character it is not surprising that it attracted considerable attention and is, we understand, extremely popular.
The main feature of the body design, for which Martin Walter, Ltd., is responsible, lie's in the ease with which it can be converted from a comfortable, four-seater saloon to a van giving a 'maximum loading space of 65 cubic ft. The time taken to make the conversion is about 30 secs. Two separate front seats are provided, the accommodation for the rearseat passengers being so arranged that the seat and cushion can be sunk flush with the floor.
It is to be noted that in whatever form the vehicle is used, nothing is lost as a result of its adaptable features; there is ample leg-room as a private car, and there is ready access to the load when the body is being used as a van.
From the accompanying illustration of the complete vehicle it would not readily be appreciated that this new Fordson was any other than a normal saloon, giving good visibility for both driver and passengers. The fitting of. a window in each of the rear doors makes for a particularly light interior.
Metal panelling is employed throughout, and a useful feature is found in the provision of blinds to the rear windows—an aid to safe driving at night.
Leather cloth is used for interior trimming, the floor being covered with lino with aluminium slats carried longitudinally..
In In order to meet the requirements of different trades, a number of optional fittings is available. The price of the standard model is 2159, and the maker is the Ford , Motor Co., Ltd., Dagenham.
