Details of the New B. and E. Gear for Bedford Vehicles

ANEW hydraulic end-tipping gear as been introduced by Bromilow and Edwards, Ltd., Foundry Street, Bolton, for 2-ton vehicles and, at the invitation of Hamilton Motors (London), Ltd., 466-490, Edgware Road, London, W.2,—which company will be handling this gear in regard to all Bedford models—we have been able to examine it. The gear is being listed by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd, as a standard fitment, so that it will be marketed throughout the Bedford sales orga nization.

The gear follows standard B. and E. design, and perhaps one of the most interesting features concerning it is the fact that the price is only in 10s.,

including fitting. The standard telescopic ram with three sections is employed, this having a ball-and-socket base mounting and a trunnion at the fixing to the front of the body. The

single reciprocating plunger pump is contained within the oil reservoir, and chain driven from a 1-in. shaft, 2 ft. 11i ins, long, which is coupled through the medium of two sprockets and a duplex roller chain to the short shaft of the power-take-off attachment bolted to the gearbox. This shaft is driven by a sliding pinion and is carried in two ball bearings. The long shaft is mounted at the rear in a ballrace housing, bolted to a plate on the front of the oil reservoir, this ensuring" correct alignment of the driving with the driven sprocket.

Control is through the medium of a -screw valve at the side of the vehicle, and, before leaving his cab, the driver engages the sliding pinion, which sets the pump in motion, If the body hinge be placed at the end of the frame, a 50-degree tip is obtained, so that there is scope for increasing the angle. In addition to the ordinary B. and E. overload valve, the driver is prevented from over-tipping by the limit of the oil capacity of the container. This is a neat and perfectly safe way of preventing over tipping.

The important working parts of the tipping gear, including the hydraulic portion, are entirely enclosed and protected against dirt.

Hamilton Motors (London), Ltd., is able to offer the Bedford 2-ton shortwheelbase chassis with Hamilton dropside lorry body of wood With steelarmonred floor and a tailboard hinged at the top and detachable, together with this new tipping gear, at £280, the body measurements being S ft. 2 ins. by 6 ft. 4 ins. by 1 ft. 6 ins. high. If an arc-welded steel body by E. G. Brown and Co., Ltd., Tottenham, London, N.17, be substituted the price is £7 10s. extra.
