Dominion Imports from U.S.A. President of the Board of _Trade has stated that the annual average value during the latest three years for which information was available of the imports of motor vehicles and parts, including tyres, into the selfgoverning Dominions from the United States, expressed as a proportion' bf the total imports from all countries, amounted to 73.5 per cent.

The exclusion of Canada, of which imports of motors and parts are almost wholly from the United States, would. reduce this proportion to 56.6 per cent.;, whilst if India were included the pro-. portion would be further reduced to 52.8 per cent.

Slow-moving Traffic.

ALTHOALTHOUGH the London Traffic UGH Committee has not made any recommendation to the Minister of Transport regarding the closing of cer tain streets in London to horse traffic, it has under consideration, Mr. Morrison states, the question of restricting during certain hours the use of Oxford Street by through slow-moving traffic, including horse-drawn vehicles, in connection with the proposal for theinstallation of traffic control by light

signals in that street. • Compulsory Carrying of Fire Extinguishers. •

!FR. MORRISON 'has declared that iYLhe proposes to embody in the regulations prescribing the conditions under which public-service vehicles may be used a provision that a suitable and efficient appliance for extinguishing fire must be carried.

Incidentally, the question of fumes given off by vehicles using heavy oil instead of petrol is being considered in connection with the regulations under the Road Traffic Act. Notice of Expiring Licences.

T"question of terminating the practice of some licensing authorities in giving notice of the expiry of licences has been again raised in Parliament by members desiring to per made the Minister of Transport to reconsider his attitude and permit such

notices to continue. Mr. Morrison, however, adheres to his decision that the practice must be abandoned.

Lighting of Arterial Roads.

UPON a request that he should take up with the various local.,authorities the question of lightinearterial roads, the Minister of Transport admitted that representations had from time to. time been made to him on the subject_ He had no power, however, to intervene as the matter was entirely one for the lighting authority.

Mr. Morrison' added that lie had no powers to deal with street lighting, and in the case• of, arterial roads in, rural areas and areas not built upon he could not. see that it was necessary that' there should be any lighting.

.Sparks from Steam Vehicles.

TEM question of damage by -sparks from traction engines, etc., is being dealt with in regulations now in course of preparation under the Road Traffic Act. , Mr. Morrison states that he has given notice of his intention to make these regulations and heolproposes to bring them into operation' on January 1St next
