Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HAULAGE COMPANIES are facing a recruitment crisis unless they plan to avoid driver vacancies, according to an industry survey.

The Skills for Logistics (SfL)

investigation into 1205, UK workplaces employing more than 17,000 drivers found that:

• One driver in six is over 55 • Last year only 8% of driving jobs were f 'lied by new recruits • Of these jobs, 80% were filled by experienced drivers, with more than half of all vacancies filled within a month • Almost 20% of drivers are leaving the industry each year due to retirement or ill health SfL says this high level of driver mobility within the industry suggests drivers are moving quickly from one employer to another. SfL warns that recruitment trends are masking future problems for the industry if the ageing workforce is not being replaced by younger drivers.

SfL chief executive Ian Hetherington says the answer lies in diversity and training: 'We know that companies that offer ongoing professional development schemes have a lower rate of staff turnover. Pay and working conditions are similar across the industry so employers need to offer something extra to set them apart from the crowd.

This could help attract more women to the industry. Just because companies are finding it easy to recruit staff at the minute they can't afford to think that will always be the case."
