• The rise in the number of foreign-registered vehicles entering the UK appears to have slowed, according to new figures from the Department of Transport.
While the number of vehicles entering and leaving the UK rose slightly in the first three months of 2001, the proportion of those registered abroad remained static at 47%, when compared to the last three months of 2000.
This is the first time in several years that there has not been an increase in foreign traffic through UK ports.
In the first quarter of 2001 the number of vehicles travelling to the Continent rose by 7,800 to 592,900. There was a negligible increase in the number of powered vehicles, while unaccompanied trailer traffic rose by 4%.
However, comparing the first quarter of 2001 with the same period last year, the number of powered vehicles rose by 5% while the number of unaccompanied vehicles remained the same.
