A MAJOR project which will result in an entirely new design of bus by .1985 has been initiated by the Swedish National Development Company and the Greater Stockholm passenger transport company. The first phase of the project has just ended with the publication of a 46page report detailing the specification of such a vehicle.
It will have very low wheels to provide easy access for passengers, especially those who are handicapped or who have prams. Air conditioning would be provided and special attention would be given to exterior or interior noise levels. The bus would be constructed to withstand front, rear and side collisions and emergency exits would be placed on both sides and on the roof.
The next phase of the project will be the design of an initial prototype and eventually three to six test buses will be built. After any necessary modification the final stage would be the construction of an experimental series of 40-50 vehicles.
