Clifford D. Surch has joined Southern British Road Services as management accountant. His experience in the financial world includes seven years with STC.

A. R. Butt, chairman of the Road Haulage Association 1964-1966 and chairman of the labour relations committee until his recent retirement (CM August 9), has been made an honorary member of the RHA in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the Association and the industry. His certificate of honorary membership will be presented to him on September 25. Mr Butt, who is managing director of Morris Transport Co Ltd, Sutton Coldfield, was also chairman of the employers' panel of the Road Haulage Wages Council for four years. He was awarded the OBE in 1970. The only other RHA honorary members are Sir Reginald Wilson, chairman TOG; G. W. Quick Smith, former deputy chairman of the NFC and now a member of the Transport Tribunal; and J. T. Turner, a former RHA national vice-chairman.

I. Q. Neilson, 45, has been appointed head of the vehicle safety division of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. Since joining the Laboratory, in 1961, he has carried out research into all aspects of vehicle safety.

George Govan, 37 has been appointed manufacturing director of Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd. He joins the company after five years as managing director of his own management and manufacturing consultancy, G & E Govan Associates Ltd, of Hartlepool, Co Durham.

Brian William France, 37, becomes company secretary of Alder Valley on October 1 in succession to N. A. L. Keeping, who recently took a position outside the industry. Mr France was appointed Yorkshire Traction company secretary in 1967, but since 1971 has been outside the industry.

Neville Smith, 47, succeeds Bert Boys as commercial manager with National Travel (North West) Ltd. Mr Boys becomes traffic manager of Western Welsh and Red and White.

J. E. Fitzpatrick, 54, has been appointed divisional garage manager of London Transport's east area bus division. He joined in 1938 as a depot clerk, and was appointed manager of the bus training centre at Chiswick in 1969.

Robert V. Mathers, 46, has been promoted to the newly created position of technical director of Rockwell Standard, Europe, responsible for product engineering, quality control, and technical research and development.

Obituary

Mr Kenny, 53, was managing director of the haulage firm of J. & E. Kenny Ltd, Peterborough.
