COMMERCIAL production has now
begun of a refuse collector with barrier loading and retractable wheelarches, designed by the city engineer and surveyor's department of Liverpool Corporation. Light-alloy bodywork is being built by Glover, Webb and Liversidge, Ltd., 561 Old Kent Road, London, S.E.I.The first production model is based on a Bedford longwheelbase chassis. The design was fully described in The Commercial Motor on May 20. 1955 It permits the triangular wheel arches to retract and lie flush with the floor when the body is tipped. The triangular form of the wheel-arches restricts the use of the body, however, and to make it more adaptable, part of each wheel-box has now been hinged and can be folded back to make a level loading area.
