/ A West Country lorry driver has been suspended and disciplined by his employer, Somerset County Council, after he used his vehicle to try to save an exhausted stag from the Quantock Stag Hunt.
Driver Colin Pearce is now back at work but received a written warning after the hunt complained of dangerous driving when Pearce placed his gulley emptier between the hunt and the stag, which had taken refuge
in a porch. Somerset Council says the hunt accused Pearce of driving his vehicle backwards and forwards in front of the house; there were also "verbal exchanges".
The stag failed to escape — members of the hunt dragged it from the porch and slaughtered it. "We have had more letters on this subject than any other issue — and they were all indignant about Colin's suspension," says a council spokesman.
