• The future of the proposed Folkstone-Boulogne freight-only ferry service has yet to be decided.
British and French groups are both urgently seeking the crucial financial backing to enable the chartering of the 40-commercial vehicle freight vessel Marine Evangeline.
Bert Wall, an ex-Sealink seafarer, who is heading the British bid which involves the use of British crews, says his banks seem satisfied with his request for £2m. However, they are due to talk again soon, and his plans are bound to suffer if the French rivals announce they will start first.
The French, who wish to use Romanian or Polish crews to save money, are attempting to persuade a French or British entrepreneur to put up the cash.
